Why we applied for the Hilton Surpass American Express

PLEASE NOTE: THIS DEAL HAS SINCE EXPIRED

One of the more undervalued loyalty programs in my opinion is Hilton Hhonors. Earning points can sometimes be a chore, and the points redemptions for a lot of hotels in the USA are exorbinant. But, there are a lot of ways to not only earn a ton of Hilton points, but also redeem them in way that makes sense. The Hilton Surpass American Express right now has a special Limited Time Offer that you should seriously think about.

The offer

  • First, lets talk about the offer. From now until May 31st, you can get 100,000 Hilton Honors bonus points after you spend $3,000 in purchases on the Card within your first 3 months.
  • Every year After the first year when you renew the card on your anniversary, you get a free weekend night at any Hilton hotel worldwide.
  • When you’re at Hilton hotels, you’ll earn 12x points for each dollar, above and beyond the points you’ll earn for staying at the hotels themselves.
  • Regular purchases earn 3x points, and money spent at Supermarkets, Gas stations, and Restaurants earn double that, or 6x points.
  • Just having the card will earn you Gold status, but spend $40,000 in a calendar year and you’ll earn Diamond status through the end of next year.

How to get great value

Category 1 hotels for Hilton are only 5,000 points a night and are the best use, in my opinion, of your points. The hotels are in a lot of places you might want to be (like Florence, AL or Cleburne, TX) but in reality there are some places on the map that are amazing values.

Tucuman, Argentina is a great place to spend a few days if you find yourself in Argentina.

And even a Hampton Inn in Panama City

Casco Viejo Panama City

You could spend almost an entire month at one of these hotels for just the signup bonus and the initial offer spending.

Throw in some Category two hotels and you’ve got yourself even more options like the Doubletree in Agra or the Doubletree in Bratislava (one of our favorite cities!)

We got the card because, well, it offers the best opportunity for us to grab some cheap hotels and stay there for weeks at a time. We should be able to hit the $40k spend in the year, so we’ll be able to get Diamond Status, and with that we’d get free breakfast every morning, premium wifi, and lounge access if they hotel has one.

Imagine spending two weeks, on the beach, at a resort, eating and drinking for free, just because you signed up for a credit card. Count us in!
