Adios Mexico! Alaska Airlines drops Mexico City in November
When Alaska Airlines launched their Mexico City route, we were super excited. The relationship with AeroMexico was on the fritz and since we couldn’t credit any AeroMexico flights to Alaska anymore, being able to fly to the capital city was a huge benefit. We could use our companion certificates and gold guest upgrades on a route that had tons of space. Well, now we know why there was tons of space… no one is flying!
Alaska Airlines will be cancelling their Mexico City routes as of November 7th. You can see that the schedule is completely empty on their website.
Alaska very quietly cancelled their San Diego service and San Francisco services earlier this year and the LAX route remained on a 2x daily schedule. Apparently the loads were light as it’s time for them to call it quits as well.
It’s a shame because we had a blast on their inaugural flights. You can read about it here. I remember when tickets went on sale we bought them right away. As a matter of fact, there was a glitch for a while where you could get first class for the same price as coach. Winning!
It’s never a happy time when a route gets cancelled, especially when they’ve put so much money, time, and effort into making a route work. I mean, those MEX balloons cost a ton.

Interesting – I read earlier today that WestJet is also canceling all their flights to Mexico City

That’s really disappointing. I think it’s the routes. Maybe if they ramped this up from a Midwest airport it could work. Say Dallas or Denver to MEX.

Here in San Diego it’s so easy for us to just drive over to the CBX (Cross Border Express) and fly out of Tijuana. The tickets are typically super cheap. Granted, it’s a bit of a hike out out there but typically was always much cheaper. Still, I agree with you it’s sad when an airline has to drop a great route like this. Mexico City is an awesome city!
