The Inn at 97 Winder, Detroit, Hotel Review
It’s no secret that we’re fans of SPG properties and chain hotels in general. While they’ve got a large footprint, there are places that they just don’t reach.
Every now and again we like to stay in boutique hotels, too! I decided what a cool mother’s day it would be if she and I could go to a Detroit Tiger’s game, and so we started looking for the closest hotel to the park. To our delight, there was really cool historic property not 3 blocks away called the Inn and 97 Winder.
From the hotel’s website:
Designed by famous architect John V. Smith, the inn was completed in 1876 as a private home for philanthropist John Harvey and his family. At several times throughout history, the inn reigned as the most expensive private home in Detroit. A recent painstaking renovation has restored the building to its original glory with the same careful attention to detail for which its architect was admired. The Inn at 97 Winder achieved acceptance into the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 and is truly a standout among Detroit hotels.
I parked on the street in front of the hotel (free parking) and headed up to the main entrance.

Each room in the public areas is different, decorated with antiques from various decades and centuries.

In the rear of the hotel is the expansive kitchen. Here every morning is where the breakfast is served.

If you’re feeling a bit peckish, you can raid the fridge whenever you see fit. Whatever’s in there is all yours! Soda, water, yogurt, etc. Make yourself at home.

We headed up to the room on the 2nd floor (note, no elevator here, so apologies to anyone needing an ADA friendly hotel). The bed was beyond comfortable and decorated with a ton of pillows.
The most modern part of the hotel was the bathroom. It has been completey remodeled and included an amazing soaking tub.

Being just a couple blocks from the park made getting to and from the game a breeze.

The next morning breakfast included a good mix or everything. It was pretty easy to fill up!

The hotel was only about 2/3 booked when we arrived, so if you want a stay close to the game with free parking in downtown Detroit, you’ve gotta give them a go!
