We’re flying on Island Air’s last day!
Today, November 10th, will be the last day for Island Air service between the Hawaiian Islands. It just so happened that we’re landing today in Honolulu and flying over to Lihue. It also just so happens that we’re flying Island Air. So much for an easy, relaxing vacation. What luck!
Unless you’re adept at navigating a boat, there haven’t been that many options to get between the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaiian Airlines has been around for decades with a bunch of other airlines coming and going. I remember a few years back flying on Aloha and Mokulele but never had the chance to try out Island Air. We’re a fan of smaller, boutique airilnes (check out our Air Swift post) so this would give us a chance to try out Island Air’s service and blog to you. Now, that blog post about Island Air is going be about one of their last flights.
The airline filed for Chapter 11 a few weeks back it wasn’t enough. The banks wanted their money and their planes and it was too much of a legal fight for Island Air. They were forced to shutter their doors today, November 10th. Their website only has the following:
Thank you for your support
We are no longer accepting new reservations at Island Air and will cease operations at end of day on November 10, 2017.
For inquiries on refunds, please contact your credit card company.
We apologize for any inconvience this may have caused.
For any questions or concerns, please call 1 (800) 652-6541.
Talk about lack of advance notice… and we thought Delta Skymiles was bad!
Luckily we’re going to get to the start of our vacation, but anyone who is flying tomorrow or later is S.O.L. If you are affected by the cancellation of flights, Hawaiian Airlines is here to help. They’re offering free standby service on any of their intra island flights, and if you should want a confirmed seat, they’ll sell you a spot for only $71 each way.
Stay tuned for the last and FINAL trip report for Island Air!

So you can get there — with no way to get back? Well, there are worse places to be stranded!
