The Boeing Museum of Flight in Seattle, WA
Just a few short miles to the south of downtown Seattle lies the Museum of Flight, a museum owned and operated at Boeing Field.
It’s been around since more than 50 years and gets about a half a million visitors every year. Over 140,000 students come through the museum each year as well as part of Boeing’s commitment to education through summer camps and outreach programs. The museum will rent out the space for private functions as well if you so desire!
You can even do a couple of walkthroughs of airplanes. They’ve got an old United 727 AND the Air Force One used during the Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon administrations, and more.
It’s pretty wild to think of what happened in that plane, from Lyndon Johnson being sworn in after the Kennedy assassination to (other). You can see some of the very 60’s and 70’s ish design from the color of the seats to the signs above all the instrument panels.
Here you can see one over the phone saying “This phone has no security provisions. Sensitive or classified material should not be discussed.â€
At the entrance, there’s even an old United Boeing 247D airplane from the beginning of United’s service.
The first 747 flown, the “City of Everett†is on display, complete with a smattering of all the airlines who ordered the product.
If you haven’t stood next to one of the 747 engines, this ought to give you an idea of the size of these babies!
They also have a gallery where you can see all of the history of the Boeing advertising.
The main area of the museum is covered with airplanes from every decade of flying, You can rent the space out for a private event, as this night was the Jeff Bezos Pathfinder Award Ceremony.
There’s even a USAir ¼ fuselage with a sampling of the first class product. Inside they have the ad running for Southwest Airlines from the 70’s.
If you’re an #avgeek like us, then make sure to do yourself a favor and visit the Museum of Flight, even if it’s just on a layover. You can get in from 5p-9p for free on the First Thursday of every month with Wells Fargo, or there are plenty of other discounts available as well. Enjoy!
