Want to go to the Olympics? Here’s how to get tickets

I had the joy of going to the Olympics in London in 2012 with my mom, and we scored some amazing tickets.  It was my first time in London and seeing the Olympics was the icing on the cake.  This year the Olympics are in Rio and, contrary to popular belief, tickets are still available and for certain events they’re in good supply!

The Olympics this year are just a few months away, yet tickets are still available and flights are not that expensive.  Of course, if you’re reading this blog, then you can probably use your miles and points to get there too for even less money.  If you’re not sure when the Olympics are, it’s in 133 days, from August 5-21 in Rio De Janiero, Brazil (airport code GIG).

The ticket distribution for the US is handled by CoSport, which also handled the ticket distribution in 2012 for London.  Each country has their own agency or agencies to procure tickets, and CoSport is the official channel for the US.

The ticket process is pretty straight forward.  About a year ago they had a lottery where all people interested could place a “bid” on their tickets, and then if there was more demand than tickets, a random allocation would take place.  We requested about 30 tickets and only got 2, so our luck this year was not that great.

Anyone who didn’t decide to move forward with their lottery allotted tickets could choose to buy individual tickets during the open sales period (which is now, by the way).  So, if you’ve wanted to get to the Olympics, and you want to visit Brazil, now is an excellent opportunity.

Apart from the individual ticket sales, you can also buy hotel packages and VIP hospitality packages, but in my experience these are grossly overpriced and not that good of a deal.  But, if you want to head to the opening or closing ceremonies, these are the only way to go.

As of this post, there are still tickets available for:

  • Archery
  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Fencing
  • Football (including the gold medal match and victory ceremony)
  • Golf
  • Handball
  • Hockey
  • Judo
  • Taekwondo
  • Volleyball
  • Weightlifting

Don’t wait too much longer, as flights and hotels are getting limited, but if you act now, you should still be able to find a good deal.  Or, get on social media and make a friend in Rio, fast.  Maybe you can secure a cheap bed to crash for a couple days.  Regardless, these opportunities come once every 4 years, and the next time in 2020 will be in Tokyo.  In 2024 Rome, Paris, Budapest, and Los Angeles are in the running.
