A New Canadian Airline takes flight… Flair Airlines!

There’s a new player in Canadian airspace, Flair Airlines. The new ULCC (Ultra Low Cost Carrier) is based out of Kelowna, British Columbia and is already starting to fly across the country.

Canada’s skies are getting pretty crowded with the likes of WestJet, Air Transat, Air Canada, Swoop, Jazz, and more ferrying the country’s 36 million people. But the folks over at Flair Airlines feel that there is still room to grow. The company has plans to carry over 1MM people in 2018, ambitious for sure.

Currently Flair Airlines is operating five (5) B737-400 with an additional two (2) 737-400s entering service in the next few months!

The company’s founder and CEO doesn’t seem worried at all. In a statement he said:

The focus going forward will be on attracting more millennials to Flair, who make up 70 per cent of the airline’s customer base, by offering an improved website with a focus on smartphones, and partnering with vendors to offer unique services to passengers. He also said Flair will be a “premium ULCC†that will charge customers more for more spacious seats at the front of the plane.

Premium ULCC?

Now that’s a first. I thought the idea of ULCC was to be an Ultra-Low-Cost… there’s nothing premium about your knees in your chin while the dude in front of you reclines, that is of course unless the seats don’t recline. :). The seat pitch is a shocking 34″. Most airlines consider 34 inches to be a Premium product, and Flair gives it away for FREE.

Destinations

Flair Airlines will use Edmonton as their transfer hub and will service cities including Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Hamilton (think Niagara Falls) and Toronto. Fares start at CAD$59 (US$47) one way for what they call the “Loonie” fare. That’s the cheapest more restrictive fare, but it sure does save you a boat load of cash.

Interested in learning more about Flair? Their websites certainly has a lot of it. Not quite as much as Jennifer Anniston in Office Space, but it’s good. You can access their website here.

  1. I don’t think you are correct with the seat pitch. Although there are no seat maps, I believe the 34 inch seat pitch is on their charter business aircraft. The seats on a regular flight that one would book say Vancouver-Toronto is the 156 seat (not the 76 seat) 737-400 with a seat pitch closer to 30inches.

Although I don’t know for sure, that is just what I got when I went to the website to look at their “fleet” and the information.
