Korean Air Business Class from Denpasar (DPS) to Seoul (ICN)

Airport Lounge in Bali and Business Class DPS to ICN

We arrived to the airport via hotel shuttle which was our preferred mode of transit given the reliability and cost (around $11) at around 11:45pm and proceeded to the checkin counter for Prestige Class.

The checkin was uneventful and fast, being that it was just a little over 1 hour before our scheduled departure time of 1:25 AM and the place was practically deserted.  Our documents were processed quickly and we were given passes to the “Premier Lounge†which seemed to be the go-to lounge for every airline under the sun.  Because of that, as you can imagine, the options were generic at best.  Imagine trying to stock an airport lounge for the likes of Korean, Australian, Chinese, American, Thai, Dutch, etc passengers.  It would be a nightmare.

The selections, being that it was midnight, were quite good however, and fresh.  We had both the beef sausage rolls and the leek mushroom quiche, which were quite good.  Seating was ample and comfortable, and it didn’t feel like a cramped lounge would (again, probably because it was midnight).

If your flight departed during normal business hours, you could have a balinese massage in the lounge as well, ranging from feet, neck, shoulder, etc, and for up to 60 minutes!  The prices were relatively inexpensive and if we would have been there during the day, it might not have been a bad deal.

There was also a kid’s play area and area with computers set up for use and workstations.

Apart from the hot food options, they also offered cereals, desserts, and cold sandwiches.

There was only one beer on offer (Anker) and plenty of soft drinks and water, self service.

All in all, the lounge was basic but quite good.  There was internet that worked, air conditioning (a must in Bali) and good food and beverage options.

From the lounge we had about a 5 minute walk to the boarding area which was set up much in a way that southwest does their boarding, or Wendy’s does their food service, with dividers separating each section and forming a non-breakable line.  No gate lice allowed!  I wish more airports did this so it would avoid the mass glob of people waiting to board on an aircraft, and would also not allow people who should not be boarding early the chance to get on board in front of everyone else.

Once we boarded we headed to our seats and were presented with menus but no amenity kits (perhaps they don’t offer them on such short flights?) and a pre departure drink.  I chose Perrier Jouet Grand Brut Champagne (to help me sleep of course) and Ben chose the fruit juice.  We were served our nuts in a bag (I guess this isn’t first class service after all) and shortly after takeoff we both passed out.

5 and a half hours later we were awakened by the flight attendant’s service cart for breakfast.  I opted for the Spinach and Ricotta cheese quiche with chicken sausage, and Ben for the disappointing seasonal fruit “plateâ€.  More like a seasonal fruit saucer.  Six tiny pieces of fruit and a bottle of water.  Lacking for a business class offering.  I would have expected this of economy service, but not business class.  I remember a few years back when we advanced ordered the fruit plate on an Air France business class flight, the fruit could barely be contained on the dinner plate as it spilled over everywhere.  There must have been at least a pound of berries and cut fruit galore.  Korean Air needs to step up their game.

The descent into Incheon was epic, as the fog was still on the water, and only the tops of the cranes in the port and power line towers were sticking out.  It was truly a creepy and awesome sight to see.  Upon landing the truly international line up of airlines came into view, and admittedly, we’d only heard of half of them.

We deplaned and headed towards the Free Cultural Experience which you can read about in the next post!

The Korean Air flight from DPS to ICN was unmemorable at best.  In fact, when we went back and looked at the picture, we had a lot of “Oh yeaaaa…†moments, because if it weren’t for these pictures, we could have easily forgot the flight.  I suppose that’s not a horrible thing, since for a 1:25AM departure, the only real thing that I care about is sleeping well and arriving at my destination refreshed, which was exactly what we got.
